A daughter captured in oil - brushstroke by brushstroke. This is the first of three sisters in a family portrait being built over months - layered by layer.
She starts a little rough…and then suddenly- there she is! This is the part of oil painting I love most: the moment her face shifts from brush strokes and shapes into an actual presence, sister two is officially revealed!
The oldest sister finishes out this custom commissioned oil portrait set that pulls the whole trio together.
The painting is starting to awaken — the girls’ energy, individuality, and playful presence begin to emerge, hinting at the vibrant, finished portrait to come
Shading and initial rendering take form, building the structure and volumes that will soon evolve into a lifelike portrayal.
The canvas and reference photos are carefully gridded, and a layer of burnt ember shapes begins to establish the composition, mapping out where light, form, and movement will take shape.
Holding the printed photograph in hand, the blank canvas waits in the background — the very beginning of a journey to bring this moment to life in oil.
